The city of Emporia’s Water Treatment Plant is beginning a process to convert its water disinfecting chemicals next week.
Water Plant Director Phil Cooper explains the burn-out process beginning Monday.
As part of this annual process, city crews will flush fire hydrants to move the free chlorine residuals through the system. Typically, this is a two-week process, but the city is extending it to six weeks to make sure there is a good free residual for the city’s wholesale customers as well as those in the city limits.
The water will be safe to drink and use for normal day-to-day items, but residents may notice changes in their water’s taste and smell, and occasionally the water may be discolored. Hot water use for things like showers, washing dishes or washing clothes may amplify the chlorine smell. Residents are asked to call Public Works at 620-340-6339 ext. 2 if they have discolored water.
