The Kansas Insurance Department has announced its annual distribution to local firefighter relief organizations.
Emporia is receiving over $108,000 as part of this announcement. As a whole, Lyon County is receiving over $163,000. The areawide total is over $525,000.
Better than $15 million is going to over 550 organizations statewide. Funds are generated by a 2-percent tax paid by insurance companies on fire and lightning insurance premiums as written in Kansas for the prior calendar year. The distribution is required by state law.
Local relief associations can use these funds to buy different insurance policies to help firefighters and their families, including accident, health, disability and life insurance.
