Admittedly a slow reader I’m plowing thru Barack Obama’s book. As a history buff, it matters not if I voted for or supported President Obama, his story is interesting.
After 250 pages his book has just gotten to the early parts of his eight years in the White House.
The new President’s first big initiative was a much-needed stimulus package to follow President Bush’s TARP to boost our U.S. economy.
He describes in a humorous way his first encounter with the legislative leaders of the day who he needed to convince to support his rapidly developed plan.
He called the leaders The 4 Tops, but, not because of their singing.
The Democrats were Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi with Republicans John Boehner and Mitch McConnell.
Former President Obama’s descriptions are worth sharing.
About Mitch McConnell he wrote – that he seemed like an unlikely leader as he “had no aptitude for schmoozing or backslapping” and “as far as anyone could tell he had no close friends.”
He said that once McConnell when being lobbied about a cause raised his hand like a traffic cop and said, “you must be of the mistaken impression that I care.”
About Harry Reid, the Dems head man in the Senate, he shared that he knew him best because they had worked together and that “Harry couldn’t stand him.” (meaning McConnell.)
John Boehner was described as “a different kind of animal, with a perpetual tan, a chain smoker who loved golf and a good merlot.” He suggested, “Boehner was careful not to stray from the party line or the lobbyists that kept him in power.”
About Nancy Pelosi, he writes “Nancy, in her designer suits, matching shoes, and perfectly coiffed hair, looked every bit the wealthy San Francisco liberal she was.” And, he suggests most politicians underestimated her at their own peril.”
That’s enough about the past, so here’s a current question courtesy of Leave it to Beaver and Facebook.
The Beaver says, Gee Wally, if most Republicans really believe Antifa, BLM and violent left-wing activists stormed the Capitol building on January 6th, then why do they oppose a Commission to investigate it?
Excellent question and definitely Something to Think About!
