Emporia’s Fourth of July fireworks show is set for Sunday night.
As has been the case for years, the Emporia State University campus will be the host site after the city decided against having fireworks due to COVID-19 last year. Police Sgt. Lisa Hayes says there will be no major changes to fireworks shows at ESU in years past.
The best viewing location will be Welch Stadium. Tailgating is welcomed across campus. Coolers and grills are allowed, but personal fireworks and alcohol are not allowed on the university campus.
The display should start between 9:45-10 pm and could last as long as 30 minutes. Fireworks have been launched from Emporia State for at least a decade after prior shows at the Lyon County Fairgrounds and the Jones Aquatic Center.
The parking and viewing map is online at KVOE.com.
Meanwhile, the fireworks sales and discharge window continues through Monday. Sales and discharge are allowed until 10 pm Friday night, 10 am to 11 pm Saturday and Sunday and 10 am to 10 pm Monday. Hayes says there have been 21 fireworks complaints since Monday.
