Emporia Fire dealt with at least two fireworks-related fires late Sunday night into early Monday.
Firefighters went to 1006 Chestnut around 9:30 pm after a porch fire. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Conley tells KVOE News a poorly-secured fireworks launcher from another address tipped over, sending one item into the front yard.
The residents were out of state when the incident happened. Fire damage was limited to the porch and there were no injuries.
Emporia Fire then split its forces for a pair of calls that happened shortly before 1 am. Firefighters went to 668 Road 215 after improperly-discarded fireworks caught an old barn on fire. The barn was destroyed. Conley says used fireworks were put in a 55-gallon plastic drum, which caught fire from the smoldering fireworks.
Nobody was hurt.
At the same time, firefighters put out a small grass fire that developed on Interstate 35 mile marker 131. The cause for that has not been announced.
Meanwhile, the investigation continues into Sunday afternoon’s fire that caused heavy fire and smoke damage inside 709 Riverview Circle. A cause for that is under investigation. Nobody was hurt.
