William Allen White in his editorial from the 4th of July in 1901 pointed out: “The Fourth of July is the only American Holiday of a rejoining as a Nation by a Nation and for a Nation.”
Meaning it’s the one day American’s come together as a Nation to celebrate our many freedoms.
Mr. White suggested, We slap our suspenders, light our seegars, walk chesty and squint at the rest of the world.
America is unique. We enjoy freedoms not present in all other countries. The Fourth of July is the one day we can forget our differences and hang as one.
Foremost of course in our Freedoms is our freedom of religion and most important for Christians is freedom from our sins because our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ gave his life so that our every sin can be forgiven.
To conclude a final point: that being my bold suggestion that the world and more specifically Americans have been granted an amazing new freedom, one that is I believe is of Biblical proportion!
This miracle comes to us as vaccines freeing us from the awful pandemic that has rocked our world that we know as Covid 19. It took intense research, rapid testing, and miraculously speedy approval of this antidote to Covid 19. This blessing is the equal of turning water into wine and most other examples described in our holy book.
The vaccines for Covid 19 have proven to be more than 99% effective. Ninety-nine point two percent of the deaths from Covid over the last few months have been to un-vaccinated victims.
Yet, only 67% of eligible Americans have been vaccinated, and even more alarming is that in Lyon County our fully vaccinated percentage is less than 50%!
This is a graphic example of “looking a gift horse in the mouth!” Sorry, but I just do not understand. We’ve been given this wonderful gift – an effective vaccine to free us from this dreadful disease, but half of our Lyon County citizens have not availed themselves of this blessing.
It is not the expense or availability of the vaccines, so what gives?
Guess it time to use our freedom to pray to ask that a little nudge be used to motivate our unvaccinated neighbors.
Enough said, I’m Steve Sauder.
