At least one jury trial is coming in the case of a Vermilion man whose body was found in a burned-out home early last year.
Jefferson Goad, age 49 of Waverly, is now set for trial to begin Nov. 8. He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and five other counts, including aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, arson and conspiracy, in the death of 83-year-old Donald McLaughlin in January 2020.
Potential trial dates for Goad’s co-defendant, 19-year-old Jeremy Penix II of Melvern, are pending. He’s also facing charges of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, arson and conspiracy.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation led the investigation with help from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Office of the Kansas Fire Marshal, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism and sheriff’s offices in Coffey, Osage, Jackson and Shawnee counties.
