Lyon County’s Volunteer Patrol is back in action.
Shelved during the peak of COVID-19 over the past year, Volunteer Patrol is making its return as part of Olpe’s Downhome Celebration this weekend. Lyon County Deputy Danny Broyles, a guest on KVOE’s Morning Show this week, says it’s good to have Volunteer Patrol back in the picture.
As was the case before the pandemic, Volunteer Patrol will offer home checks for residents on vacation and also provide a visible presence for the Sheriff’s Office at community events.
One new aspect for Volunteer Patrol is an online component for lining up services. In the next few days, residents can go to www.lyoncounty911.org and search for “Vacation Home Check Request Form.” They will then enter name, address, vacation dates, emergency contact information, authorized individuals for the property, vehicle descriptions and outbuilding descriptions. Within the next week, the same form will be available on the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office page at www.lyoncounty.org.
People interested in volunteering can call the Sheriff’s Office at 620-342-5545 or Lyon County RSVP at 620-342-6119. Volunteer Patrol members must be at least 55 years old, have a valid Kansas driver’s license, pass an FBI security check, complete a defensive driving course, be capable of walking and climbing stairs, work at least a four-hour shift per week and attend a monthly meeting.
