A pretrial hearing is coming Friday afternoon in the case of an Emporia man who allegedly killed another Emporian in a traffic crash back in March.
Devawn Mitchell has a pretrial hearing at 2 pm. He may learn his potential trial dates at Friday’s hearing.
Mitchell is accused of killing Steve Henry as part of a traffic crash on West Sixth between Lawrence and Chestnut on March 18. Local law enforcement say they broke off a pursuit before the wreck because of unsafe speeds and other traffic conditions.
Mitchell is accused of first-degree felony murder, aggravated assault on law enforcement and felony flee and elude. Rick Meier is now serving as Mitchell’s defense lawyer. He follows local attorney Paul Dean, who withdrew, and Wichita lawyer Kurt Kerns, whom Mitchell fired. Both of Mitchell’s previous attorneys were on the case for less than a month.
