School district officials across the KVOE listening area are watching their COVID-19 trends after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adjusted its guidance for students and staffers with classes starting in just a few weeks.
In a new set of recommendations issued Friday, the CDC said students and staff who are vaccinated don’t have to wear masks unless they are riding buses or the district mandates that activity. Everybody riding school buses should wear masks, vaccinated or not. Unvaccinated students should continue wearing masks and use 3-foot social distancing spaces. Districts should also offer voluntary testing at least once a week.
The CDC says it is up to districts on how to proceed.
The CDC’s new set of recommendations comes as vaccines are available for students ages 12 and up, but vaccinations for younger students may still be months away from being approved by the federal government.
