With the termination of the city/county interlocal agreement last week, discussions on the prospect of a new agreement could be coming in the near future.
The Lyon County Commission voted to terminate the agreement last Thursday which also brought an end to the metropolitan planning area and will bring a reorganization to the Lyon County Metropolitan Area Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.
The metro planning area consisted of land located just beyond the Emporia city limits within a certain mile radius that was governed by the county but regulated by the city.
With the termination of the agreement all zoning matters for said land will now go through county offices and not the city.
According to County Zoning and Floodplain Manager Sam Seeley, while the metro planning area is now no more, there is the potential that the area could still be used in the same capacity as it was before, however, with some significant changes.
Seeley says the area could become known as the Urban Growth Area in the future and would be smaller than the metro planning area. However; Seeley tells KVOE News this is dependant on whether or not the city and county came come to terms on a new agreement.
According to City of Emporia staff, there have been conversations on the potential of a new agreement, however, there is nothing concrete at this time.
City and County commissioners will discuss the potential of a new agreement during their upcoming joint meeting Wednesday at 11:30 am.
