That College of Emporia Graduate Arthur Schabinger is credited by some as throwing the first forward pass in a college football game.
In C of Es 1910 game at Washburn, Schabinger has been credited by some to have thrown the first legal forward pass in College Football history. Some dispute the claim. There are claims dating back to 1906. If not the first the College of Emporia most certainly one of the first innovators, using the overhand forward pass instead of the underhanded pass.
In the 2nd to last game of 1910, Schabinger scored 7 touchdowns in a 107-0 win over Pittsburg Normal, now Pittsburg State.
Schabinger would make a bigger impact on the game of basketball.
He Coached basketball at Ottawa, Emporia State, and Creighton, 19 seasons in all and had only 1 losing season.
He was one of 6 coaches to organize the National Basketball Coaches Association and helped write the bylaws.
He organized a tournament that would select the players for the 1936 Olympic team, the first year that basketball was an official sport in the Olympics. The US won the gold medal the first of 15 gold medals.
He also officiated football, basketball, and baseball games. Including games played in the Missouri Valley Conference, Big-8, Kansas and Missouri Conferences, and the AAU Tournament.
He was also the founder of the Officials Sports Film service to help ensure uniformity for officials.
He is in the Basketball Hall of Fame, National Football Hall of Fame, The Helms Foundation Hall of Fame, and Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.
