Building leaders for Timmerman and Riverside Elementary schools are ecstatic after being selected as two of the latest schools that will be undergoing education redesign.
It was announced Tuesday by the Kansas State Department of Education that Timmerman and Riverside Elementary Schools would be two of 12 schools to undergo redesign as part of the Apollo III cohort. Timmerman and Riverside become the fifth and sixth district buildings to undergo redesign following Village, Walnut and Emporia Middle School, part of the Apollo II cohort and William Allen White which was part of the Gemini II cohort.
Riverside Assistant Principal Katie Adams says there are two “big positives” of the redesign effort that stood out to her.
Timmerman Principal Allyson Lyman says the redesign opportunity came at a perfect time as they are getting set to restart the accreditation process.
The Kansans Can redesign effort started in 2017 with seven schools. Now over 190 schools representing 71 districts are involved. This is the final phase of Kansans Can. This initiative calls for changes in the current education model to make learning more student-focused, with the addition of more support and resources to help students achieve success after both high school and college.
The overall plan aspires to have Kansas lead the world in the success of each student, using tracking metrics like social-emotional growth, kindergarten readiness, individual plans of study, high school graduation rates and postsecondary success to achieve that goal.
