When our Junior Senator Roger Marshall ran for Congress back in 2016, I was an avid supporter. Heck, I solicited donations and even arranged for several of his large banners to be installed around Emporia. He was replacing Tim Hulskamp who had embarrassed many Kansas Republicans, so Dr. Marshall seemed like a breath of fresh air.
Unfortunately, our new Representative quickly became ultra-conservative drinking the party’s new leaders Kool-Aide in large gulps.
Then 4 years later – heaven helps us – he gets elected to the Senate. His involvement in the “Big Lie” conspiracy and January 6 events have sealed his fate with me.
Over the past few months, Senator Marshall has become a regular on social media with posts that are not always factual, but almost always political in nature and aimed directly at the Biden administration.
Here’s an example from last week when he posted: Make no mistake, inflation is harming Kansas and Americans across the country – and the responsibility rests squarely on the shoulders of the socialist policies coming out of the White House.
It’s true, inflation is present and it is bad, but this White House is no more to blame for it than Presidents Trump’s, but Roger suggests otherwise in order to stoke his base.
Does his false narrative help? No, it just further confuses citizens and there have been dozens of them, most as misleading. It makes no sense as a large majority of responders aggressively and often rudely disagree with Senator Marshall’s positions.
Inflation? I tend to agree with the Brookings Institute that the root cause of inflation is the pandemic that caused President Trump’s robust economy to screech to an unfortunate slow down. That was followed by a recovery way faster than expected creating demands that suppliers haven’t been able to meet causing higher prices and unexpected bottlenecks in unusual places.
How long will it last? No one knows, but knowledgeable folks suggest at least two years.
What doesn’t help are fear-mongering politically motivated Posts like Senator Marshall’s. It’s time to put country and democracy ahead of party and politics. I believe this will happen and those spinning these exaggerated untruths should pay the price.
There’s “Something to Think About” and I’m Steve Sauder.
