Not every taxing entity in Lyon County decided to go above revenue-neutral for their 2022 budgets, but it was close.
Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat says 35 of the county’s 39 taxing districts filed notices to go above revenue-neutral. The only four districts that announced plans to stay revenue-neutral:
*City of Admire
*Lyon County Fire District No. 2 (Allen-Admire)
*Allen Creek Watershed
*Recreation District No. 1 (South Lyon County)
Earlier this year, state lawmakers passed a law forcing local taxing entities to file official notices if their budgets were bigger than they were the previous year, even if levies were reduced.
The next step in the process is to wait until budgets are set, no later than Aug. 25 for districts staying revenue-neutral and September for entities going above revenue-neutral. Taxing districts going above revenue-neutral do not have their budgets reviewed by the County Clerk’s Office, but the budgets for revenue-neutral-declared districts do. If those budgets actually go above revenue-neutral, Vopat has the authority to adjust the budgets down to revenue-neutral. If, by some chance, a revenue-neutral district has an actual above-revenue-neutral budget, the overage isn’t caught and tax notices go out to residents, that money will have to be refunded by the district through the county.
