(ESPN/ABC) In Olympics action from Saturday:
*The United States swim team claimed six medals, taking its first gold of the Olympics in the men’s 400-meter individual medley — as well as a silver in that event. They also earned a bronze in men’s 400 freestyle. The American women earned silver and bronze in the 400 individual medley and bronze in the 4×100 freestyle relay.
*The United States women’s national team stormed back from their opening defeat in the Olympics to earn an emphatic 6-1 win over New Zealand at the Saitama Stadium on Saturday. The U.S. went into the game looking to recover from the shock loss against Sweden in the opening match, which ended a 44-game unbeaten run.
*The US softball team will play for a gold medal after defeating Mexico 2-0 and Australia 2-1. Against Australia, the US fell behind 1-0 in the top of the eighth but got a two-run single in the bottom of the inning to win the game. The US will now play Japan, which beat Team USA for the gold medal in 2008.
*Three-on-three basketball made its Olympic debut today with the U.S. women’s team defeating France, 17-10, in their first game and Mongolia, 21-9, in their second. This Olympic version of a street game is won by being the first to 21 points, or leading after the 10-minute game clock has expired.
*Bryson DeChambeau is out of the Olympic golf tournament due to a positive COVID-19 test. DeChambeau will be replaced by Patrick Reed.
