The National Weather Service is extending a heat advisory for Lyon and most surrounding counties through 9 pm Friday. A heat alert has been upgraded for two neighboring counties.
Chase and Greenwood counties are now in an excessive heat warning until 11 pm Friday. This reflects index values as high as 105 degrees Thursday and Friday, according to the Weather Service’s Wichita forecast office.
Heat index readings could be as high as 110 for Lyon County and the remaining area counties. Heat index readings got as high as 107 in Emporia on Wednesday.
Be sure to drink lots of water and stay in air conditioning as long as possible. If you work outside, take frequent breaks and shift the work schedule so the heaviest activity happens in the morning or evening. Don’t leave children or pets in vehicles.
