Downtown Emporia traffic has one hindrance in place this week.
The railroad crossing at Merchant Street is now closed for crossing repairs. The street could be closed through Friday. Detour signs are posted.
In addition, the city is starting waterline work on Elm between Fifth and Sixth this week. This is a two-month project that could well involve lane closures and shifts.
Separately, the Kansas Turnpike Authority’s bridge-raising project has closed one Lyon County bridge over the Turnpike for at least a month. The Lyon County Highway Department says Road 220 between Roads K and L — above the Kansas Turnpike just north of the Emporia service exit — closed Monday and may actually remain closed until late September.
The KTA is raising a number of bridges in Lyon, Chase and Osage counties as part of its latest round of similar bridge work.
