Concealed carry applications are up in Kansas.
Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt says applications for the fiscal year ending June 30 topped 7,700, more than double the total for fiscal 2020. In addition, Schmidt noted a relatively high number of license renewals.
Almost 20,000 applications were filed in Kansas in the prior fiscal year.
The 2021 legislative session was active on the concealed carry front. Lawmakers approved a modest reduction in the new license application fee from $132.50 to $112. The new fee structure is now active. License renewal costs remain at $25. Also, lawmakers approved a new provisional license for people between ages 18-20. Separate provisions allow people to carry concealed if they have had certain misdemeanor or felony convictions expunged.
The state’s concealed carry license program started in 2006. Legislative changes five years ago let eligible Kansas residents carry concealed weapons without licenses. Kansas licenses are currently recognized in 40 states.
