Congress may well approve a massive infrastructure bill before starting work on the overall budget. That doesn’t mean Kansas Republicans like either option.
The infrastructure bill alone includes $110 billion in new funds for roads and bridges, $66 billion for rail needs, $7.5 billion for an electric vehicle charging station network, $25 billion for airports, $65 billion in high-speed internet and more. Senator Jerry Moran says it includes several personal priorities, including spending for roads and broadband. However, the price tag is just too steep.
The total is over $1 trillion as part of a $3.5 trillion budget package that could also include universal pre-K education, free two-year community college and paid family leave.
The entire budget process has drawn the ire of Senator Roger Marshall, who says the so-called “human infrastructure package” has nothing related to infrastructure attached. He has accused the Biden administration of following “unsustainable and irresponsible spending policies that are actually ruining our economy” and contributing to a $29 trillion national debt.
