If your cell phones go off with a Wireless Emergency Alert at 1:20 pm Wednesday, it’s only a test of the Emergency Alert System.
The test is being conducted through a partnership involving the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Federal Communication Commission. The message on cell phones will clearly state the alert is a test only, according to the federal government. Cell phone users who have opted in to receive the so-called WEA messages will get an alert saying “This is a test of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is required.”
There will also be an Emergency Alert System test on radio and TV.
If widespread severe weather is in the forecast, the test will be postponed to Aug. 25.
