One more day of oppressive heat is expected before a welcome cooldown.
The National Weather Service has reissued a heat advisory for Lyon, Coffey, Greenwood, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties until 8 pm Thursday. Air temperatures could climb as high as 97 degrees, but peak heat index readings could range from 103-109 after Wednesday’s top heat index of 106 at the Emporia Municipal Airport.
Relief may be coming in the form of thunderstorms early Friday as a cold front approaches and through the morning after the cold front leaves. Friday’s highs will be in the upper 80s. Thunderstorm chances will persist through the upcoming weekend with highs in the mid-80s.
