Another day of scorching heat is in the forecast.
Air temperatures could reach 99 across the area Wednesday with heat index readings as high as 109. Monday and Tuesday had peak heat index readings at 107 for Emporia. Heat advisories continue until 8 pm areawide.
Tuesday also had a bout of strong thunderstorm activity for residents in the southern half of Lyon County. Nickel-sized hail was reported in downtown Emporia along with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. Over 200 Evergy customers from Emporia to Madison last power for close to five hours during and after the storms.
In addition to the power outages, there was a weather-related fire south of the Emporia Municipal Airport. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Tony Fuller says a utility pole broke, began sparking and fell into a line of trees. With the trees being green, the fire didn’t move much — which was good, because it took Evergy about three hours to de-energize the line as the company handled numerous outages in Lyon County and from Topeka to Kansas City.
