Classes for the fall term have started at Flint Hills Technical College. So has the accreditation process.
President Caron Daugherty says the 10-year accreditation cycle is underway, so Higher Learning Commission site review teams will come to campus Sept. 13. The purpose of that meeting is to “kick the bricks.”
Planning and resources are also getting reviewed, including a COVID-specific exit plan. Public meetings have not been announced but are being discussed.
Accreditation is an important process for colleges and universities because it demonstrates higher education is fulfilling its mission.
Meanwhile, college administrators are watching Congress to see whether lawmakers pass a roughly $3.5 trillion package — which could include free tuition at community colleges. Daugherty says that would “absolutely” involve technical colleges like Flint Hills.
If passed, Daugherty says this could be significant for students — and if concurrent partnerships are extended as a result of the budget package, this could lead to lower costs for the college.
