A near 17-hour long negotiation and investigation situation in far east Emporia ended Monday morning with the arrest of an Emporia man on suspicion of numerous charges including attempted murder.
Emporia Police were called to a residence at 900 Waverly Way around 6:45 pm Sunday evening for a reported domestic disturbance situation involving a firearm. Emporia Police Cpt. Lisa Hayes says police set up a perimeter and determined all occupants had vacated the home except for the armed suspect later identified as 43-year-old Ronald W. Schemm of Emporia.
After several attempts to establish communication with Schemm and negotiate a “safe apprehension,” the EPD Special Response Team was activated Monday morning before Schemm finally vacated the residence and surrendered himself to police without incident around 11:15 am.
No injuries were reported. Schemm was booked into the Lyon County Detention Center on suspicion of attempted murder, 2 counts of aggravated assault, criminal possession of a firearm and discharge of a firearm into an occupied dwelling.
Formal charges are pending.
