Emporia Public Schools has its Jump Start activities for new students, either to the district as a whole or to their new buildings, on Wednesday.
Classes begin for all district students Thursday, and the Emporia Police Department is urging drivers to be safe around school zones and school buses. One of the easiest ways to be safe, according to Officer Jaffar Agha, is simply to plan ahead and pay attention.
Fines are in place for drivers who speed through school zones, and they are double the amounts for other speeding violations. Agha says the minimum fine would be $110 with additional court costs of $77. Fines max out at $740 plus court costs. Habitual offenders could have their licenses revoked.
Fines are also in place for drivers who go past school buses with the stop arms out. The minimum fine is $215 plus court costs, with that doubling in school zones. Again, habitual offenders could lose their driver’s licenses. Agha reminded residents to follow traffic rules around buses.
