Formal charges have been filed in Lyon County District Court against the five individuals arrested in connection to the 2017 murder of Emporian Jesus Avila.
21-year-old Andrew John “AJ” Granado of Tulsa, Oklahoma, 21-year-old Jordy Cornejo-Campoverde, 20-year-old Armando Nunez, 19-year-old Alan Alanis and 20-year-old Jovan Pecina all of Emporia have been formally charged with murder in the first degree, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery, arson, and interference with a law enforcement officer.
All five individuals were arrested Wednesday in connection to the murder of Avila whose body was found in a burned-out car near Roads 160 and T south of Emporia back in September of 2017.
Four of the individuals arrested were juveniles at the time of the murder and have been charged as such. As of now, only Cornejo-Campoverde has been charged as an adult.
The Lyon County Attorney’s Office is planning to submit motions to the court to have all five individuals tried as adults.
