Residents using federal unemployment benefits at any point since the COVID-19 pandemic began last year are getting a reminder that those programs are disappearing soon.
Kansas Labor Secretary Amber Shultz says the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation will all end Sept. 4.
*The Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation offers at $300 weekly payment for claimants eligible for at least $1 of underlying unemployment compensations.
*The Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation involves an extension of benefits after claimants exhaust their regular unemployment benefits.
*The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program gives benefits to self-employed or gig worker claimants who aren’t eligible for normal compensation programs.
The plans were first authorized under the CARES Act of 2020 and extended through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
Claimants are encouraged to file weekly claims through Sept. 9 if they are still unemployed. If claimants are entitled to state benefits, they will receive those payments even after federal programs end. Starting Sept. 5, the state’s Regular Unemployment Insurance will be the only jobless program available in Kansas.
