Scratch another community event off the calendar.
Emporia Main Street has reluctantly decided to cancel The Taste, which had been planned for Sept. 25. Main Street Director Casey Woods says the decision came after discussions amongst different committees and the Main Street board.
The Taste was canceled last year as well, and Woods says the one main difference between this year’s planning and last year was the experience gained over the past 16 months, especially when it comes to cooperation and coordination with Lyon County Public Health.
Having said that, Main Street’s Welcome Back Block Party on Monday and the Great American Market on Sept. 11 are both moving forward. Woods says the market specifically is “a different sort of event.”
The block party, meanwhile, will still offer music, prizes and information on Emporia State and Flint Hills Technical College student organizations as well as local businesses and groups. Unlike past years, those attending the event will receive passports to visit either the businesses themselves or vendor tents in the 800 block of Commercial and thus be eligible for prizes. Passports will be available in the 1100 block of Commerical and the Emporia Main Street tent in the 800 block of Commercial.
