Heat advisories for Lyon and several surrounding counties have been extended to Thursday evening.
The National Weather Service has Lyon, Coffey, Osage and Wabaunsee counties in an advisory until 8 pm Thursday. Chase and Greenwood are in another heat advisory from noon Tuesday until 8 pm Thursday. Morris County is in an advisory from 12-8 pm Tuesday.
Air temperatures are expected in the upper 90s through Thursday with heat index readings as high as 103-107. Monday saw a high temperature of 94 in Emporia and a peak heat index reading of 104.
Don’t forget to take extra steps to make sure you and yours are safe like drinking lots of water, staying in air conditioning as much as possible, changing your work schedules if needed to handle the most strenuous activities in the morning or evening. Also, keep a close eye on young and old alike. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles when it’s this hot.

4:15 pm Monday: Heat advisories expanded, extended into Tuesday evening
The heat advisory originally in place for Monday for several area counties, Lyon County included, has already been extended into Tuesday. Now it has been expanded.
Lyon, Coffey, Osage and Wabaunsee counties had an advisory extended to 8 pm Tuesday. Chase, Greenwood and Morris counties are now in an advisory from 12-8 pm Tuesday. The advisories reflect air temperatures approaching 100 degrees areawide, with heat index readings as high as 107 degrees.
Monday has already seen a heat index reading as high as 104 in Emporia. With air temperatures possibly at or slightly below 100 through Thursday, there is a chance the heat advisories may be extended.
