An Emporia man who allegedly led a vehicle and foot chase in downtown Emporia — and other parts of town early Tuesday afternoon — has been booked on suspicion of flee and elude, DUI, assault on law enforcement and other charges.
Police Capt. Ray Mattas says officers were alerted to a possible reckless driver by Lyon County deputies around 12:30 pm. An officer saw the car in question headed eastbound on Sixth at Oak, and as the officer tried to get in position behind the suspect vehicle, it sped off. Another officer saw the vehicle eastbound at a high rate of speed at Sixth and State. The officer tried unsuccessfully to stop the vehicle, although it became disabled in the 600 block of Commercial.
The driver, identified as 31-year-old Juan Cervantes, fled on foot and was captured in the 800 block of Merchant.
Besides the alleged violations mentioned earlier, Cervantes was arrested on suspicion of transporting an open container of alcohol.
Formal charges are pending through the Lyon County Attorney’s Office.
