Suffice it to say that Kansas US Senator Jerry Moran is not at all pleased with the US situation in Afghanistan.
Moran isn’t criticizing the overall goal of withdrawing from Afghanistan, something expressed by both the Trump and Biden administrations, but he was sharply critical of what he called a haphazard approach to the withdrawal and an arbitrary deadline that only adds to the chaos.
During a special on-air interview on KVOE, Moran took issue with several aspects of the withdrawal effort, including Tuesday’s deadline for evacuating Americans and others wanting to leave the country, an apparent unwillingness to follow up with the intelligence guidance on a potential terror attack at Kabul’s airport that materialized with two bombings Thursday and the reliance on the Taliban as a partner in the withdrawal. Moran says the United States can’t trust or tolerate Taliban leadership at any point in time.
Moran stopped short of comments from fellow Republicans, including Senator Roger Marshall, calling for Biden to resign or be impeached — saying lawmakers need to return as soon as possible for closed hearings with Biden’s administrative team. Tuesday’s deadline, he says, should be scrapped.
At least 13 American soldiers were killed as part of the bombings near Kabul’s Hamiz Karzai Airport. Up to 15 soldiers were hurt. At least 200 Afghans were killed.
