Jeff Colyer served Kansas as governor for almost a full year when Sam Brownback became an ambassador in the Trump administration. His bid for a full term has now ended.
On Monday, Colyer announced he was ending his campaign to receive treatment for prostate cancer and to focus on his own medical practice.
Colyer served as Brownback’s lieutenant governor for nearly two full terms. He then narrowly lost the Republican nomination in 2018 to then-secretary of state Kris Kobach, who lost to Democrat Laura Kelly.
In making his announcement, Colyer endorsed Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, his primary rival in the gubernatorial race and now the front-runner to claim the Republican nomination.
The general election is in November 2022. Currently, the only announced candidate who has filed with the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office is Republican Kent McElroy of Leavenworth.
