For the second straight year, coronavirus has altered the game plan for the Relay for Life of the Flint Hills.
The main event will be compressed, according to organizer Monica Schmidt on KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Monday.
The survivor dinner planned for Thursday has been canceled due to COVID-19, but a silent auction will take place all next week on the Relay for Life of the Flint Hills Facebook page. Two raffles, one for a special cooler through Triad Leasing and one for a custom-made necklace by Kari’s Diamonds and Bridal, are also part of the fundraising. Tickets for the cooler are $1 for one ticket or $5 for six tickets, while tickets for the necklace are $5 for one or $20 for five tickets. Luminaria are also available at $10 for adults or $5 for students.
Schmidt says fundraising has been affected “a little,” but Relay for Life is still accepting sponsorships and Schmidt believes fundraising is still “right on track.”
Fundraising helps several avenues for the American Cancer Society, including research, education, advocacy and services like 24-7 helplines, travel expenses and accessories including wigs.
Last year’s event also featured a drive-thru luminaria event. Typically, there is a survivor’s meal, luminaria ceremony, 24-hour walk and other activities.
