One of five suspects in the 2017 murder of Jesus Avila will be back in court next week.
Jordy Cornejo-Campoverde, 21, appeared in Lyon County District Court Wednesday during which time his defense counsel Rick Meier submitted a motion to modify Cornejo-Campoverde’s bond. A motions hearing to discuss the bond has been set for next Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 10 am.
Cornejo-Campoverde is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Nov. 8-10 in Lyon County District Court as is 20-year-old Armando Nunez both of whom are charged as adults in the case.
The other three defendants — 19-year-old Alan Alanis, 20-year-old Jovan Pecina and 21-year-old Andrew Granado — all have motions hearings later this year as work continues to certify them as adults. Pecina will be in court Oct. 7-8. Granado’s hearing is Oct. 14-15. Alanis’ hearing is Nov. 1-2.
All five were arrested and subsequently charged two weeks ago following the discovery of Avila’s body in a burned-out car southeast of Emporia nearly four years ago.
