An Emporia woman’s condition is unknown after a train and vehicle collided east of Emporia late Thursday afternoon.
Authorities were called to the intersection of Road 160 and T, five miles east of Emporia’s eastern city limits, just before 3:30 pm for a report of an injury accident. According to emergency personnel at the scene, a southbound SUV was traveling on T and apparently failed to yield at a railroad crossing.
The SUV was then struck by an eastbound train and rolled away from the intersection. The driver of the SUV, identified as 26-year-old Samantha Vargas from Emporia, had to be extricated from the vehicle before being airlifted to Stormont-Vail.
Vargas was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Traffic was blocked in the intersection for a time following the accident. Stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for more information as it becomes available.
