A pair of small fires this weekend — one in Emporia, one near town — highlighted the need to have working fire extinguishers on hand.
Emporia firefighters were called after the fact to a house fire at 408 Neosho shortly before 1:30 pm Sunday and were asked to both check for hot spots and investigate the situation. Early indications are a battery charger caught fire and caused minor fire damage to an upstairs bedroom.
Overnight, firefighters were called to a house in the 1300 block of North Highway 99 after a dryer caught fire. Again, there was minimal fire damage. The exact cause is unclear.
In both cases, the residents used fire extinguishers to put out those fires before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported with either incident.
