While many around the country are doing all they can to support relief efforts in Louisiana and part of the northeast portion of the US, not everyone has the best of intentions when it comes to “charitable” efforts.
As residents continue to lend aid through monetary and supply donations, they need to be mindful of scammers seeking to keep those donations to themselves. The Office of Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt recently sent out a news release to this point offering some tips to help you avoid being a victim of scammers and ensure your donations reach their intended destination.
Schmidt says residents should only support local, established charities which work closely with international organizations where you can see the results of your donations. Residents should also be mindful of organizations that sound eerily similar to other known organizations as scammers will typically mold their fake organization after more well-known charities.
As always, do not give out any personal information over the phone or through email. You should also ask if your “donations” are tax-deductible and make sure to document any and all donations you make.
