Emporia State University’s TRIO Upward Bound and Talent Search program recently received a generous grant award to ensure the program can continue serving future college students in the local community.
It was announced Thursday that the ESU program had received a $1.4 million grant award through the US Department of Education’s federal TRIO program. The program identifies disadvantaged “first generation” students at the middle school and high school levels who “have the potential to succeed in higher education” and provides assistance to help them graduate high school and move on to post-secondary education.
Annually, the ESU program assists more than 500 students in Emporia, Atchison and Leavenworth. According to ESU TRIO Director Julie Cayton, each of these communities have educational specialists placed in local middle schools and high schools who provide a range of different academic services to students enrolled in the program.
The program also provides one-on-one and group tutoring to help students in “completing a rigorous secondary school program of study and improving standardized test scores.”
