Bushong and Allen were busy places Saturday.
Bushong held its sixth annual North Lyon County Veterans Memorial car and bike show with a host of other activities, including a World War II reenactment. Robert Cunningham of Emporia was involved in the reenactment, which involved the 101st Airborne Dog Company of the 506th and the 128th Evac medical unit. He says it was rewarding to be involved after helping with prior fundraisers for the memorial.
In addition, there was a kiss the pig contest, live music and the event’s first pulled pork cook-off.
Also, Allen had its second Veterans Fall Festival — with an eye towards next year, according to organizer Jeannie Buckbee.
Activities took place from sunrise to well past sunset. Residents took part in Wild West re-enactments, craft and food vendors, an ATV poker run, a car and motorcycle show and a live auction featuring a .22-caliber rifle signed by Buck Taylor of the TV classic “Gunsmoke.”
Proceeds from the Veterans Fall Festival will be turned over to the American Legion in Allen for use as the Legion sees fit. Fundraising in Bushong will benefit the memorial, as well as developing plans for a museum and memorial wall.
