In welcome news for parents of school-aged children, Pfizer says its COVID-19 vaccine is effective for students between ages 5 and 11.
Pfizer plans to submit a request for Emergency Use Authorization for those ages soon. Pfizer says the vaccine was “safe, well-tolerated and showed robust neutralizing antibody responses” among the nearly 2,300 students that followed a two-dose regimen as part of the trial.
Pfizer and its medical partners also say results from its two other ongoing trials, one for children ages six months to 2 years and another for children ages 2-5, could be finished later this year.
Pfizer has full authorization for vaccines for people ages 16 and older. It has emergency use authorization for children ages 12 and 15. Moderna and Johnson & Johnson have emergency use authorization for people ages 18 and older.
