Six people were taken to three different hospitals following an early morning crash on Interstate 35 in western Coffey County Monday.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at mile marker 148 just over four miles south of the K131 junction shortly before 8 am and involved two vehicles a 2014 Ford 150 pickup and a 2013 Ford Fusion. According to KHP, both vehicles were northbound when the pickup, driven by 21-year-old Daniel Scott Urban of Ozawkie, rear-ended the Fusion driven by 43-year-old Sonia Flores Vega of Pharr, Tx.
The vehicles came to a rest near the outside shoulder of the roadway. Vega and a passenger, 43-year-old Christine Flores also of Pharr, were taken to Newman Regional Health with suspected minor injuries. Four other passengers were also transported to different hospitals for a range of injuries.
* 21-year-old Joel Alvarado of Jackson, MS, was taken by LifeSave helicopter to KU Medical Center with suspected serious injuries.
* 16-year-old Bertha Lopes of Pharr was taken by a LifeStar helicopter to Stormont Vail in Topeka with suspected serious injuries.
* 18-year-old Jesus Vega of Pharr was also transported to Stormont Vail by Osage EMS with suspected minor injuries.
* A 1-year-old infant was taken to Newman Regional Health with possible injuries.
Urban had complaints of pain, however, refused a trip to the hospital according to KHP.
Urban, Sonia and Jesus Vega, and Flores were all wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Lopes, Alvarado and the infant were not and the infant was reportedly not in a car seat at the time of the crash.
Traffic was blocked at the crash site in both directions for some time following the crash as helicopters landed in the area. Traffic resumed around 9:30 am.

Traffic is starting to move around the site of a significant crash in western Coffey County.
KVOE listeners report northbound and southbound traffic on Interstate 35 is starting to move past the crash site near the Lebo exit. Two airlift helicopters have also departed the scene, although it’s unclear how many patients they may be carrying and where they are headed.
Few details are available about this crash. The Kansas Highway Patrol says at least two vehicles may be involved, with multiple victims going to multiple hospitals.”

9 am Monday: Two airlift helicopters called to scene of crash at I-35 Lebo exit
Interstate 35 is reportedly closed in both directions after a crash east of Emporia.
Reports of the wreck came to KVOE News around 8:20 am. Details are currently pending, but the wreck apparently happened near the Lebo exit and has prompted a response by two airlift helicopters. At least two vehicles are involved, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol, with “multiple victims going to multiple hospitals.”
