Traffic in and around downtown Emporia is getting more constricted due to construction.
Repaving work continues on Commercial Street, or Kansas Highway 99, between 12th and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks. The work had a significant part of Commercial Street north of 12th closed Monday, but that part of the street is reopened to traffic Tuesday.
As part of that overall project, milling has started on Sixth Avenue or US Highway 50 moving east of Neosho Street. Traffic is being funneled to the outside lanes for both eastbound and westbound drivers as this part of the project begins.
The better than $620,000 project is set to run through October, weather permitting.
Meanwhile, drivers need to be aware of a separate construction project beginning next week. Burlington Northern Santa Fe’s contractor will start repairing the railroad bridge over the Mechanic Street underpass, so the underpass will be closed.
The contractor and the railroad have not mentioned a potential end date for the project. Detours will be posted by early next week.
