It was a battle to the very end Saturday as Pittsburg State held on for a 30-28 win over Emporia State.
Emporia State Coach Garin Higgins said there were a lot of positives.
Pittsburg State scored on their first two possessions a 1 yard run by Tyler Adkins and a 32 yard pass to Elijah Harris. Emporia State responded with a 9 yard Braden Gleason to Tyler Kahmann tou
chdown pass. It was the first career touchdown pass reception for Kahmann.
Pitt State took a 21-7 lead on a Caleb Lewis 10 yard run. Emporia State would score 14 unanswered points to tie the game at 21. Braden Gleason scored on a 1-yard run and connected with Cole Schumacher on a 6-yard
scoring pass. Pittsburg State retook the lead on a 16-yard scoring pass to Jalen Martin. They added a 39-yard field goal to take a 30-21 lead.
The Hornets put together a 16 play 97 yard drive to cut the deficit to 30-28 when Braden Gleason scored on a 6 yard run.
Emporia State was unable to cover the on-side kick and Pitt State ran out the clock.
Braden Gleason finished with 348 passing yards and 2 touchdowns and scored 2 rushing touchdowns.
Defensively Emporia State was led by Jace McDown with 10 total tackles.
Pittsburg State quarterback Mak Sexton threw for 309 yards and 2 scores.
The Hornets are now 2-2 for the season and will host Washburn next Saturday.
