COVID fatigue has been in place for months, if not well over a year in many respects, but Lyon County Public Health Incident Commander Renee Hively is asking residents to use all COVID-19 mitigation policies until the pandemic is finally done.
Mask use and social distancing have been “highly recommended” by Lyon County since early to mid-spring. Despite an ongoing increase in cases and a more recent increase in deaths, Hively says there isn’t the political will to go beyond policy recommendations now.
When Lyon County began transitioning from mandates to recommendations, specifically for mask use and social distancing, caseloads were in the single or low double digits per reporting period, and that trend continued until early August, when new cases rose to between 20-50 per report. New cases dipped briefly to the teens but shot up by nearly 90 Wednesday with another 54 cases added Friday. On Wednesday, Lyon County also went above 5,000 total cases almost 18 months to the day after the county’s first announced case.
