A report of a grass fire on Interstate 35 east of Emporia led to the discovery of three fires instead.
Firefighters from Lyon County District 4 — Emporia’s rural fire unit — as well as Hartford-Neosho Rapids and Reading were called out to Interstate 35 mile marker 141, near the Hartford-Neosho Rapids exit, shortly before 5 pm Sunday. Reading crews were canceled as the fires were put out quickly.
The causes of those fires are undetermined.

Several area fire departments have been called to a reported grass fire east of Emporia.
Crews from Lyon County District 4 — Emporia’s rural fire unit — as well as Hartford-Neosho Rapids and Reading were called out to Interstate 35 mile marker 141, near the Hartford-Neosho Rapids exit, shortly before 5 pm Sunday. Reading units were canceled before reaching the incident scene.
The fire apparently developed on the south side of the highway. A cause or causes are unclear at this time.
The grass fire comes with a very high fire danger in place through at least the early evening hours. High temperatures reached the mid-90s with humidity levels staying under 25 percent and gusty south winds approaching 40 mph. Similar conditions are expected Monday with highs in the low 90s, low humidity levels and south winds gusting as high as 25 mph.
