Firefighters from two area departments spent over two hours putting out a structure fire northeast of Emporia late Sunday afternoon.
Area firefighters had a busy Sunday afternoon in hot, dry and breezy conditions.
Fire destroyed two cooler trailers in the 1300 block of Road 210, property owned by Larry Dieker. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says both were fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived shortly after 5 pm and were eventually destroyed.
The fire was contained quickly but smoldered until 4 Rivers Electric Cooperative could cut the energy to the buildings. There were several buildings nearby, but Steinlage says the fire essentially kept itself from spreading further.
Emporia Fire, Lyon County District No. 4 and Reading Benefit Fire responded along with Lyon County deputies. A cause has not been announced. No injuries were reported. There were several Dieker Dairy pieces of equipment at the property, although that location is not an official storage facility for the company.
