A bridge near Americus is closed effective immediately.
The Highway Department has closed Road 225 between Road F-5, about two miles south of Americus, and G-5. Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods says there is an urgent need to close the bridge at this time, especially as work continues on another bridge replacement project.
The bridge was already “programmed” for replacement. Woods says the wing walls, which are adjacent to abutments and serve as retaining walls, have failed so the timetable for closing the bridge had to be pushed up.
Traffic will be closed to through traffic until further notice. Woods encourages residents to heed the barricades while the bridge is closed and later replaced.
Woods says a work schedule at Road 225 is pending.
