The Emporia Sertoma Club is preparing for its major fundraiser. At the same time, it’s gearing up to get the miniature train rolling again.
Club member Terri Summey says the annual scholarship breakfast will take place outside the Emporia Senior Center on Saturday morning. With the Senior Center closed until at least Oct. 12 due to a COVID-19 case, there have been concerns about whether the Sertoma Club’s event can move forward. Summey says it can and it will.
The meal costs $5 and includes biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, Fanestil sausage, milk or orange juice. Proceeds benefit scholarships at Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College.
As preparations continue for the breakfast, the club is pleased to announce the miniature train in Soden’s Grove has been repaired after mechanical issues developed about six weeks ago.
The club has conducted several test runs since the repairs. Summey says the club will have a special train run during the David Traylor Zoo’s Boo in the Zoo event on Halloween as well as another holiday run before Christmas, weather permitting.
