Emporia’s Hispanic community will be celebrated during a special event on the Emporia State University campus Thursday.
The university’s Student Recreation Center will be hosting a Hispanic Heritage Celebration featuring vendors, music, dancing, food and a pinata-making competition among other activities. The celebration comes in the middle of Hispanic Heritage Month which began on Sept. 15 and concludes next Friday.
Event organizer and host of KVOE’s Nuestra Musica Vic Rodriguez says celebrating Hispanic culture is vitally important especially for younger generations of Hispanic residents.
Director of Diversity Student Programs at ESU Teresa Taylor-Williams says in addition to the aforementioned activities, the event will also feature an emotional tribute to those who have been lost over the past year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Luminaria will be available during the event and individuals are invited to write down the name of a loved one and release them during the tribute.
The Hispanic Heritage Celebration will take place from 4 to 8 pm. Vendors are still welcome to sign up for the event by calling Taylor-Williams at 341-5879.
Vendors will be asked to contribute $35 which will go towards ESU’s Latino Legacy Scholarship fund.
